AMAZING SEA CREATURES

Sea urchins off Jamaica’s north coast appear to be making a comeback; furthermore, scientists discovered many young corals, including hardy and reef-forming types, thriving along with the sea urchins. The reefs have been struggling ever since a sea urchin species called Diadema antillarum died off dramatically in 1983 and 1984. Some species of sea urchins control the growth of seaweeds, which if left unchecked can devastate coral reefs. However, new studies show that Diadema has sprung back, and corals may be doing the same, and the recovery is the best news to emerge from Caribbean reefs in decades.         Sea creatures across the globe are being poisoned by tiny plastic pellets floating in the ocean. Chemical companies ship polymers in the shape of small pellets to manufacturers around the world that melt them and then mold them into plastic products. However, thousands of tons of these pellets pass into the sea from factory or city waste as well as from cargo that

TERRORISM EVERYWHERE

In East Timor, Southeast Asia, 700,000 frightened people had to flee the terror of killings, beatings, indiscriminate shootings, and forcible displacement. They left behind a landscape laid waste by marauding militias. “I feel like a hunted animal,” cried one of the victims                 In Moscow an apartment building was ripped apart by a huge terrorist bomb blast. 94 bodies were dragged out of the rubbles, some of them children. Over 150 were injured.                 Hatred can well be described as a global epidemic. Almost every day, news reports reveal what happens when racial, ethnic, or religious animosity joins hands with lawlessness. We see unspeakably inhumane acts being perpetrated simply because some people are “different”

AMAZING FACTS ABOUT GEYSER

A hot spring which at regular and irregular intervals thrown a jet of hot water and stream into the air; sometimes the jet rises to a heights of 100 to 200 feet. It occurs in a volcanic region.          From the mouth of the geyser, a tube penetrates deeply into the earth, and fills with water, which percolates through from the surface. The water near the base of this tube is considerably heated by hot lava, but the tube is long and narrow that convection cannot take place freely; the temperature of the water down below thus continues to rise, the boiling point of the water is relatively cool.      At the same time, the boiling point of the water at the base of the tube is raised by pressure, and the temperature has to reach well above 100 degrees centigrade before steam is formed. When this does take place, the water above is forced upwards and flows away. The sudden reduction of the pressure at the bottom of the tube lowers the boiling point of the water, and the

THE AMAZING ORDER OF EVENTS OF THE RESURRECTION

It is not easy to harmonize into a connected story the fragmentary records of the four gospels about the resurrection of Jesus. In a few sentences there are generalizations of many details. We are not told all the incidents in the precise order of their occurrence.         Let it be remembered that there were different groups of disciples, lodging at various places, going to the tomb in different companies, and that they were not expecting Jesus to rise, but were visiting the tomb to complete the embalming of his body for permanent burial.        The first sight of the empty tomb, and the angel announcement that Jesus had risen, threw them into wild excitement.        They ran to tell the others, hurrying back and forth in alternate joy, fear, anxiety, wonder, and bewilderment.       Many things happened that are not recorded. Of what is recorded, one writer tells one thing; another, another thing. One gives in a sentence what another describes in detail. Some,

THE MYSTERIOUS DUST DEVIL

A local whirl of dust, usually not more than a few yards in diameter, in which the particles are swept round and round the centre, and are lifted to considerable heights –sometimes to 2,000 or 3,000 feet above the earth’s surface. It is caused by excessive local heating by the sun in an arid region, a strong convection current being formed. Dust devils usually move over the desert at from 5 to 15 miles per hour, though speeds of over 30 miles per hour are sometimes reached, and as many as five or six of them may often be counted by the observer. Being so limited in size, they are harmless even to aviation.       A storm in which a thick mass of dust obscures the atmosphere, and reduces visibility very considerably –sometimes practically to zero. It causes acute discomfort on the surface, and is a danger to aviation. It is caused by a turbulent wind blowing over an arid, dusty surface, and its approach is usually heralded by
